RomantiCELLO
New World MusicReviewed by Syd Baumel
Like one of those tour de force extended dolly shots in the movies, in "Angels" Howard Green bows his cello for nearly 10 minutes of continuous heart-tugging legato over a harmonically simple motif. You might expect sameness or even tedium. But Green keeps the passion and tension building through a series of ebbs and flows in this neo-romantic piece, reminiscent of similarly lyrical treats from New Age musicmeister Ray Lynch.Caressing melody lines a la Lynch recur often in this indubitably romantic album that features Green's cello and classical/Spanish guitar and John Knight's violin over an understated keyboard orchestra. The style varies from lacy classical to Euro-jazzy.
There's nothing outstanding, much less envelope-pushing about these eight tracks. But they're sincere, performed with infectious emotion, and should give a nice massage to any listener's soul.
