Humane and sustainable food options abound in Southern Manitoba Originally published in The Aquarian, Summer 2003. Last updated, March 2009. Organic food has gone mainstream. You can find it in most any supermarket. But the best selection usually is in the specialty stores, farmers' markets and other businesses that have driven the movement for decades. Lately, their number in the Winnipeg area has grown, and this is our listing of every one we could find. Organic has developed a buddy: local. Locally produced food generates less "food miles" and therefore fewer greenhouse gas emissions on its way to market. Buying local helps prairie farmers build and sustain an agriculturally and socially diversified rural economy. The 100-mile diet phenom has hit Manitoba, and you can learn all about it at the 100 Mile Manitoba website. Or point your mouse here and here at these directories of Manitoba farmers' markets, u-picks, market gardens and roadside stands. In keeping with the spirit of ethical consumerism, we’ve also listed suppliers of fair trade products (as in chocolate not grown by child slaves in Ivory Coast) and animal foods produced more humanely than the factiory-farmed fare that is the norm in Manitoba foodstores and restaurants. (For a more exhaustive listing of fair trade sellers, visit fairtrademanitoba.ca.) "Humanely produced," "free range," and other descriptions can be deceptive. To make sure you’re getting what you think you are, ask the seller for specifics. A number of the businesses listed below sell or serve Winnipeg Humane Society Certified meat or eggs, produced according to higher than normal standards, such as no cages for hens or gestation crates for pregnant sows. Others may be listed on WHS’s website. We recommend checking with these businesses first to verify that they have WHS-certified products in stock. Because vegetarianism is as humane to animals as you can get and exceptionally light on the environment, we’ve listed vegetarian restaurants too. It goes without saying that all or most of the other businesses on our list sell vegetarian meat and/or dairy substitutes too. For a more comprehensive directory, see the Vegetarian Guide to Winnipeg. For a Manitoba-wide directory of organic sellers, pick up a copy of Down to Earth: Guide to Organic Food in Manitoba. Produced by the Organic Food Council of Manitoba, this inexpensive booklet is sold at organic food stores and restaurants and can be ordered from Sharon Taylor, 779-8546, staylox@hotmail.com. If you're looking for farmers' markets, market gardens, roadside stands or U-picks, the province has a directory here. It also has a "Manitoba Shopping List" that helps you find foods produced in Manitoba (including organic) and the retailers who sell them. Finally, if you don't have the privilege of living in Manitoba, to find ethical food worldwide visit eatkind.net. It’s true that ethical eating usually costs more at the checkout counter. But the savings to the environment, rural society, human health and animal welfare are priceless. The Aquarian
