One day while I was at the gym, I overheard a conversation between a fellow coach and a gymnast. They were discussing a score she received at a competition and I could see the disappointment on this young girl’s face. She’d hoped to do better and was feeling down because of it. Her coach sought to reassure her by telling her how well she did for the first one this year, how hard she has worked and how much further she could go. In true me fashion, I had to say something too. I told her, “You are always good enough. And you have no limits.” Her coached smiled at us and said, “I like how she said it.”
That whole scenario got me thinking. As a gymnast, mother, wife, person in general, I’ve often adopted the belief that I was never good enough, that I had to try harder, do better, etc. It has taken me a long time to believe that I am always good enough and always try my best in any given situation, and that the results are what they are. So, here is what I want to say to this young gymnast now and to anyone in particular, whether you received a test score or find yourself at a crossroads in your life:
YOU ARE HERE.
This place in your life is a point on the map. It’s not even the beginning because you’ve already started. This is where you are. You can go anywhere from here if you believe you can. You can grow in any direction. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. The path doesn’t have to be a linear line. The best journeys always have detours and we learn so much because we veer off the path sometimes.
You are already awesome. Believe it. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, too. Have faith in yourself that even if it’s not a good place you find yourself in, it can and will get better.
Your best is always good enough. Don’t beat yourself up because you think you can do better. We can always improve. Be proud of what you have accomplished and how hard you have worked to get to this point on the map.
No matter where you find yourself in your life, you always have choices. Don’t tell yourself stories with the message that you cannot do something. The more we believe something negative or positive, the more it will come true! So, tell yourself a good story.
Wherever you want to get to in life, you can get there. Keep working hard to discover how that will happen and don’t get caught thinking you only have to do it one way. There are a million ways to do something, so find the way that works for you.
You Are Here. Now, where do you want to go?
